Exterior Cleaning in Bruton

Bruton sits down in the Brue valley with the town built up both sides of it, and that shape is the reason properties here green over faster than almost anywhere else we work.

Local knowledge

Half the town barely sees winter sun.

In a valley running the way Bruton’s does, one side of the town gets sun for most of the day and the other side gets very little of it between October and March. Add the river at the bottom and you have exactly the conditions moss and algae want: cool, shaded, and damp for weeks at a time.

Properties on the shaded slope can be genuinely dramatic. We have cleaned roofs here where the moss was deep enough to be holding standing water, and stone paths so green they were dangerous to walk on in the wet.

The flip side is that a biocide treatment matters more in Bruton than in most places. Cleaning alone buys you a season or two on this kind of slope. Cleaning followed by treatment is what actually keeps it away.

Deep moss, cleared. Shaded slopes grow the heaviest coverage we deal with.
Worth knowing

The slip risk is the real problem.

On the shaded side of Bruton, the thing worth cleaning first is not usually the roof — it is whatever you walk on. Algae on stone steps and paths gets genuinely treacherous in the wet, and it is the sort of hazard people live with until someone goes over. If you only do one job this year, make it the paths.

Bruton FAQs

Questions from the valley.

Why is my side of the valley so much worse than the other?

Winter sun. One side of Bruton gets very little of it between October and March, and with the river at the bottom the air stays damp for days. Moss and algae need nothing more than that. Properties on the shaded slope carry noticeably heavier growth, and always will.

Can you make stone steps and paths less slippery?

Yes, and on the shaded side it is the job we would do first. Algae on stone is genuinely treacherous when wet, and it is the sort of hazard people live with until someone falls. Removing it properly makes an immediate difference underfoot.

Do you cover the villages around Bruton?

Yes — Wyke Champflower, Pitcombe, Batcombe and the surrounding villages, with Castle Cary just west and Wincanton to the south east.

Bruton is around fifteen miles north west of our base near Sturminster Newton.
