Exterior Cleaning in Sturminster Newton

This is our home patch. We work out of Hazelbury Bryan, a few miles west of the town, so Stur and the villages around it are usually a short run rather than a day’s travel — which is why we can often get to smaller jobs here at short notice.

Local knowledge

The Vale is damp, and it shows.

Sturminster sits low in the Blackmore Vale with the Stour running through it, and that setting is the single biggest factor in how quickly properties here green up. Cold air and river mist settle in the vale overnight and take their time burning off, so roofs and north-facing walls stay wet for far longer each morning than they would on higher ground a few miles away.

Moss does not need much more than that. It is why roofs around Stur, Manston, Hinton St Mary and Hazelbury Bryan carry noticeably heavier growth than comparable houses up on the chalk, and why the gutters fill faster here than almost anywhere else we work.

The building stock does not help either. The older part of town runs to soft brick, rubble stone and lime mortar, and a fair number of thatched and part-rendered properties sit alongside them — none of which will tolerate an aggressive lance. Everything here gets treated on its own terms.

Worth knowing

Gutters matter more here than most places.

A roof clean in the Vale puts a genuinely large amount of moss into the gutters — more than most people picture. If it is not cleared out properly on the same visit, it washes into the downpipes over the following weeks and you end up with water running down the wall instead of into the drain. That is how a cosmetic job turns into a damp problem. Clearing the gutters is part of every roof clean we do here, not an add-on.

Sturminster Newton FAQs

Questions from around Stur.

Do you cover the villages around Sturminster Newton?

Yes — Hazelbury Bryan, Marnhull, Hinton St Mary, Manston and the smaller places in between are all on our doorstep. We are based in Hazelbury Bryan, so most of these are a few minutes away rather than a trip.

How quickly can you get to me?

Being this local means we can often fit smaller jobs in at short notice, and we will always tell you honestly how far out we are booking. Larger roof jobs need scheduling around the weather, since softwash treatments want a dry spell to work properly.

Why does moss come back so quickly here?

The Blackmore Vale holds damp air, and roofs here often stay wet well into the morning. That is ideal for moss. It is exactly why we finish roof cleans with a biocide treatment rather than just clearing the growth — without it, you would be doing the same job again in a couple of seasons.

Do you work on thatched or listed properties?

We do not touch thatch itself, but we regularly clean the hard surfaces, render and hard roofing on period properties around the Vale. Everything is low pressure and treatment-led, and if a building would be better left alone we will say so.
